NORM-
Thank you for pushing me so hard with my sketches and my life. You made such a positive, lasting impression on me and so many others. Each time I look through your book I still get a bit choked up. You will be forever missed! I am so sorry that your family, friends, and future students at Art Center have been robbed of your charm, talent, and your love of teaching. Thank you for the memories and for making my skills better. -Brian-

Norm,

It's your birthday today. It's been a hard year for many of us. I still misschien those phone calls at whatever time of day (or night!) asking what's up and what I was working on...

Today as any other day I celebrate your life: sketching, jacuzzi, and a good glass of wine.

Cheers Norm, thank you for all you you shared with me and my family...

Forever young!

I am so sorry about your loss. I was stunned when I saw your picture in the newspaper, crying. You did not deserve that. I am praying for you.

I will always remember Norm, I met him in Switzerland at Art Center Europe, we were both there for the summer, I was a student he was an instructor. I got to know him well, and enjoyed hanging out with the outgoing young professor (I was 17 and he must have been in his late 20's). I also remember his dad Bob who was one of my favorite instructors back in Pasadena, he and Mrs. Schureman were also there for the summer and had rented a chalet in the mountains above Lake Geneva near Montroux and on the Fourth of July of 1989, they had an all-american style BBQ with hot dogs and burgers in their magnificent back yard, they invited all of the american students who were there for the summer, they made us feel as if we were with our own family back home, of course Norm was there enjoying every minute, joking around and enjoying the little piece of americana in French Switzerland. I'll never forget that afternoon at the Schureman's.
Norm will be missed, he was a hell of a guy.
All my best to the Schureman Family

Farah and I worked together a number of years ago, and through this relationship met Norman. My husband and I had the opportunity to visit the Shuremans at their lovely home in Altadena. I just heard about this tragedy last night, and the news has weighed heavily on my heart since then. I just want to extend my condolences to Farah, Milo, and Kian, and let them know that their family will be in our prayers.

I can't seem to get Norman and the Schureman family off my mind...but how could you. For the few years we lived in California, we tried to take every opportunity and share the experience of being part of the whole Schureman family. It was a blessing for us to have that influence from people who absolutely love life and family. Norman and the Schureman family will influence mine forever.

I know he is continuing to impact many others, even now!

I got to know Norm half-way through my time at Art Center...I had slowly gotten up the nerve to ask what class he was teaching after months spent sneaking peaks into his classroom and seeing the incredible drawings on the board. Norm was instantly welcoming. I took several classes with him and was always just so motivated and inspired. It's so rare to find someone so completely in sync with their calling, so radiant. Norm was just that incredibly special presence - an enormous teacher and an inspiring friend. Norm, your family is in my prayers. Thank you for all that you gave.

I still can't wrap my head and heart around the fact that Norman is gone. He will be so missed. Norman and Fati were always so kind and loving to our family. Eveytime we would come to visit from Arizona, they would drive down to Costa Mesa to see Us! Whenever anyone entered a room, Norm would get up, with his arms outstretched saying heeyyy and give you a big old hug n tell you he loved you. He was a great dad and loved Fati n the boys SO much! We are here for you Fati, Milo n Kian. Our love flies with you little brother til we meet again. I love you!! Sandi

My name is Richard Ash. My wife, Rocio, and our son, Lewis, are down-the-street neighbors of the Schureman's. My wife, Rocio, stands in the front of the window in our kitchen that faces the street. Occasionally, she has seen Norm drive by holding his hand above his eyes shielding the glare of the sun setting at days' end. He's bringing his boys home from school. She still expects to see him. As for myself, I had the good fortune of having a beer with him on a few occasions. It's true what's said upon meeting someone. You can tell what kind of person he/she is with the first handshake. He was special. We will miss him.

-Norm was one of my first instructors at the Art Center and was passionate about steering us into design and sketching habits that we would need to survive at ACCD. I remember how nervous I was for the big final presentation where I designed two clocks and made working models using a cheap off the shelf clock mechanism of course! But before the presentation Norm brought a few beers and handed them out to the few of us visibly shaken! I was much more comfortable after that!
After that term I saw him often in the halls but didn't spend as much time with him again until after I had graduated. Norm let me join him in some freelance work with a few underwater attractions he was working on in Dubai. Oddly my sister (Liv McMillan) having never attended Art Center also got to know Norm, his loving family and his hairless cat well by coincidence. It's not THAT surprising though as gregarious people find each other easily and reach out to the quieter ones.
Thank you Norm very very much.

Memories of class, sketching field trips and gatherings in your backyard will forever be in my heart.

My Father Stewart and Bob Schureman were cousins however, more like brothers. I had the good fortune to have spent time with Norman and his family as a kid growing up. Norman and I are close in age and I recall loving my time there in Costa Mesa. My Father loved Bob, Mary and their family. I fell out of touch with Norman and his family over the years, and the last time we were together was at my Fathers funeral. Unfortunately, I did not know Norman in his adult years. As a kid, he was absolutely a high energy, talented, confident Kid. Truly a blast to be with...we found (made up) interesting things to do all day long. Drawing together was a a favorite past time. We were both naturals at it, and had that commonality. The Memorial Service Sunday was amazing. I am so proud to be even just a small part of Normans life. My wife Helen and I had the privilege to reunite with many family members along with meeting Fati and some of her family. Norman has impacted my life, and will continue to do so. I am really looking forward to sharing some stories with Bob and Mary in the near future with some planned visits. Normans work has inspired me to "pick up the pencil" again, and I'll have his picture close by. My thoughts and prayers for Norman and his family. Love, John

Beautiful photos, Beautiful person he was and is, his spirit lives! I was a student of his between '92 & '96 in two of his classes. He was inspirational, encouraging, motivating, passionate, full of energy, you can see it in his eyes, just like his father, who I met at CSULB back in '86, very giving..always putting the students first. I haven't visited Norm since I graduated, so I was thinking about paying him a visit sometime in April. I was happy that I had sent him an email indicating this and Thanking him for his talent and his classes which were always the best, for being inspirational, motivational, and always teaching us, giving guidance and teaching us his coolest techniques. I also mentioned to him that I was nominated for an Emmy for my work, I'm sure he knew he was part of it. He will never be forgotten. God Bless you all.

Art Center mourns today another fallen artisan gone too soon... though we may occasionally disagree with one another, as students, faculty and staff our passion to further good art and design is the common unbreakable thread that draws us together. You have left quite a legacy for the rest of us to live up to, Norm.
To the Schureman family, know that we all cry with you.

I am so sorry to hear this news. Norm's classes in Vis Com near the end of my Illustration education profoundly shaped the course of my work after I graduated. Norm epitomized the Art Center ideal of being a very demanding instructor, but one who enthusiastically fanned the sparks he saw in his students, and lifted us up as much as he pushed us. My heart is torn for his family. Thank you for sharing your father and husband with all of us. He will never be forgotten, and he will always be loved.

Thank you Norm for all that you gave us. Your passion for life will be carried on through the many student designers that you inspired.

I still have my tea pot and sketch books from your classes and I'll continue to share stories about you.
Especially the found memory of sitting in your back yard and watching one of the wild birds fly over and take bread right out of your hands!

Let's celebrate Norm's life in the same fashion that he lived his. Norm's in a better place and he will be missed by all that loved him...

Thanks Norm. We get it.

With great sorrow at the loss of a friend and colleague of many many years. To his father, Bob, my teacher, I cannot imagine the profound despair of loosing your child who was a man of such promise and richness and who gave so much to others. He will live on through all his students and be kept close in the hearts of those who knew him. What there is of peace, let its blessings help your family through this tragedy.

I miss you so terribly already brother. Peace be with you.

Hey buddy. Yesterday Clarence took us up to hang with you and toss back a few beers just like old times. What a view, the hawk was still soaring out there...

Reminded me of all our camping trips sitting under that huge pine yesterday, it really did. Ha, remember sitting on “overhanging rock” up at Glacier Point with some cold ones?! There's a few more “no trespassing” signs now though. Never told you this, but all I could think of was... dude, I am so afraid of heights.

But you know what... thinking back now... if you could capture that one moment in time with the wind, wildly howling up the face of the mountain into ours... the only word that comes to mind was... exhilarating. Everything about your life was exhilarating Norman. And for that, you were one of the very rare lucky ones. Thanks for always being real.

To his students... if you ever venture up to Yosemite, I encourage you to go up to Glacier Point (but please stay behind the guardrails). It is the most incredible view of the Yosemite Valley you will ever see, something your pal Norm couldn’t get enough of... And if you make it up there, don’t look at it through your designer goggles or camera viewfinders...

Look at it through the eyes of Norman Schureman... and I guarantee you... you will be amazed at what you see... It will change your life in ways you won’t be able to explain.

Good to hang with you yesterday brother. We miss you beyond words. Koko and Bryce send ALL their love your way and to Fati, Milo and Kian!!! Much love, Stuart

I was a student of Norm last term.

Norm was the only teacher that show care and love. He always believed in me that I can be better person and succeed. He always had a big smile when he saw me whether my work was complete or incomplete.

Before I was his student or came back to Art Center, I had a tough life with friends and it was really hard for me throughout my terms. But Norm always gave me the strength and faith that I can be a better person. He once said to me, "Christina, I know you are very smart and intelligent, you just need to let go of your past in order to succeed and become the designer that I want you to be. I am always here for you, so focus."

After I left Art Center, he was one of the teacher that I still remembered and still do. But recently, I have received an event that said, "Norm Schureman Story." At first, I thought he was making a presentation about school and other related school stuff. But when I read the first sentence, "Last night a dear friend and Instructor Norm Schureman passed away." I was in shock and confused. Then I called my friend who has him as an instructor this term, and she told me the story what has happened. I was speechless, hurt, angry (to whomever did that to Norm), and couldn't believe it. The day that my friend told me that there were news reporters at school.. I was waiting in front of my tv to see the news about Norm. Then I see a newspaper that had Norm's picture and the story what has happened, I bought it and read it. I was still confused. Looking at his picture, he had that big smile when we bumped to each other in the hallway.

Norm always encouraged me that art is not just about designing. He taught me that being a designer, you need to have fun, motivation, encouragment, and love for art. When I was slacking off, he once asked me, "Christina, what is going on? Is this not what you want to do? I know you can do it, but you are not who you are. I know you can do better." He always believed in me no matter what.

But today, at his memorial service.. sitting on a beautiful weather and beautiful view... listening to his story from his families.. it made me realize that I need to get up and be a strong person what Norm always wanted to see. As I was looking at his pictures, it made me realize so many things. It made me realize who I am and who I need to be. Just thinking about how people can be so evil and selfish and take innocent people away just within a second, it makes me so upset.

Although it was a short period of time, I am so glad that I was able to learn from an instructor who had so much ideas floating in his mind and who had so much energy. I am glad to say, "Norm was once my teacher, my mentor and my role model of a intelligent designer." He always told me to have confidence on my sketches and his words will never be forgotten.

To Norm's families, thank you so much for sharing his stories. I know it's hard, but hang in there.

To Norm: Norm, you will always be remembered and missed. I would never forget the word of wisdom that you gave me every week. It meant a lot to me. You were the only teacher that knew so much about me and showed care and love. Thank you so much for everything. Rest in peace.

I just got back from Norm's Memorial at ArtCenter. The sculpture garden was packed , that's a testament of Norm's legacy. His legacy will live on through us to the next generation and generations to come.

It's great to see Bob hasn't changed a bit since my college days. He still cheer us up in this difficult time. Bob, I didn't get the chance to thank you in person today. Thank you very much for taking us to all the field trips and I've learned so much from the Material class. 16 years later, I still remember you how drove so fast inside of Edward Space Center in Mojave. My old Honda had trouble keeping up with you. Haha, that was an awesome trip.

To Schureman families, thank you for sharing Norm's stories with us today. There was so much love in the air that I could almost feel Norm's hug. Take good care of yourselves.

Sixteen years ago, I entered Bill Hobbs' life and had the opportunity to meet Norman and the Schureman family. Norman was already teaching at Art Center, but my husband Bill knew him as a young boy. Norman's artistic talent and his zest for life impressed me from the very first. I feel so honored to have known him and to be able to call his mother and father my friends. I will be forever touched and truly appreciate the drawing Norm did of Bill's home-built sailboat, "First Chance." It hangs in our family room and will be a daily reminder of the great loss so many have suffered. I pray that the love and support of friends and family will some how help to heal the hole that has been created by the tragic loss of Norman Schureman.

I was a student of Norms in 1996. He was my viscom teacher.

What I remember most was how he gave every student in our class the same attention and motivation. Art Center had some teachers that were frankly not that good at teaching, giving most attention to the "stars" of the class. Norm wasn't like that at all, he would push the students that needed more help, always being encouraging and given them the undivided attention when needed. He had that gift of making your feel like you were the only person in the room when he talked to you.

Teaching us the power of observation and then drawing it, with such personal generosity, that's what I will remember most.

You will be missed!
